Our second AC electric cab ride was filmed back in the summer of 2015 on board Freightliner’s 4M87 Felixstowe to Trafford Park service.

This volume covers the 76-mile journey between Ipswich Yard and Wembley and represents our first programme to feature a Class 90. The route is a southbound run along the Anglian Main Line to Stratford and then along the modernised North London Line to Camden Road.

From there the 4M87 takes the short freight only chord past the redundant platforms of the former Primrose Hill station before joining the West Coast Main Line at Camden Junction.

The final five miles are along the Down Slow Line past Queen’s Park station and Willesden TMD before accessing the High Level Goods Line which runs alongside Willesden Royal Mail Terminal.

Our third programme on traditional railway signalling covers the eighteen miles of the busy Mersey main line from Halton Junction to the terminus at Liverpool Lime Street.

Seven boxes and panels - each of them vastly different - cover this fascinating route. As well as five different passenger train operators, the route has six freight terminals dotted along it, and this programme features many of the signalling movements that are required for trains to access the various sites. At Edge Hill and Lime Street, such is the intensity of the passing passenger services that the Signaller had to provide a live running commentary as he signalled the trains! As you will see, there is absolutely no margin for error.

The seven featured boxes are:

HALTON JUNCTION - the smallest of the seven boxes has a full size lever frame. It handles London Midland and Virgin passenger services and a variety of freight?traffic. The box also controls access to the Halton Curve.

RUNCORN - built to air raid precaution specification, this Grade 2 listed building also has a full size lever frame. Situated by Runcorn station, it also handles passenger and freight traffic as well as controlling access to the Folly Lane freight branch.

DITTON JUNCTION - has a large Entrance-Exit (NX) panel. Freight trains serving two nearby terminals require complex shunting manoeuvres and this programme features both of them.

SPEKE JUNCTION - the largest full size lever frame on this section of route, the Speke frame has 86 of them. The box also controls access to and from the Garston Freightliner and automotive terminals

ALLERTON JUNCTION - situated by Liverpool South Parkway station, this manual box houses a delightful 70 lever frame and controls access to Allerton depot. The volume of passenger trains steps up a gear as the main line is joined by the Cheshire Lines from Widnes and Warrington Central.

EDGE HILL - houses a large and complex NX panel. The volume of passenger trains steps up yet another level here with the addition of the Chat Moss route from Huyton and Manchester. The Signaller explains how Edge Hill undertakes the regulation of trains in and out of Lime Street.

LIVERPOOL LIME STREET - has a magnificent Westinghouse 'L' type power frame with 95 miniature levers. Passenger services at the terminus are so intensive that the Lime Street Signallers handle around approximately one train movement every two minutes during the day. The Signaller here provides a live commentary while an axle counter failure at Huyton adds some drama to the relentless action!

Produced with the full co-operation of Network Rail, this programme was filmed during the summer of 2017 while all seven boxes were still fully operational and before Lime Street station was remodelled. All the scenes in this programme will eventually be history - Halton Junction, Runcorn and Lime Street have already closed and the others will follow in due course.

Ever since we produced our first cab ride programme in 1994, our cameras have filmed around fifty subsequent journeys. For a variety of reasons, not all of them have seen the light of day but among the countless hours of tape lying on the cutting room floor is some really interesting, unusual and – in many cases - historical footage. This programme comprises six mini cab rides featuring rural branch lines and busy main lines. All six were filmed on different types of traction - ranging from a 1961-built Class 20 and a 1984-built Class 58 to a modern high-speed Virgin Pendolino. The cab rides were filmed between 2001 and 2017.

HOLYHEAD-BANGOR on 57309: Filmed during the period when Virgin Class 57s were diagrammed for a daily Pendolino drag between Crewe and Holyhead, this sequence features the 25 miles of route in North Wales from Holy Island across Anglesey and onto the mainland. It is a section of route that has plenty of interest - semaphore signals, jointed track, request stops, Britain’s longest station name...and the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits.

HOPE CEMENT WORKS-EARLES SIDINGS on 20056: This rural backwater in Derbyshire, which connects Hope Cement Works to the Hope Valley Line, is virtually hidden from view. A single Class 20 over the 1.5 mile branch line compliments the surroundings. On this occasion it was an unsilenced 20056 that was on the trip duties rather than the usual silenced Class 20.

ACTON WELLS-WEMBLEY YARD on 58025: A short cut from the North London Line to Wembley Yard. The maze of trackwork starts at Acton Wells Junction and the short journey continues via Acton Canal Wharf, the quirky single-track Up & Down Acton Branch, the Willesden Relief Line and the High Level Goods Line which leads into the busy Wembley Yard.

KILMARNOCK-BARRHEAD on 55022: Deltic Royal Scots Grey tackles the seven-mile climb from Kilmarnock to the summit at Dunlop, hauling a refurbished EMU to Yoker. This rural journey features the impressive collection of semaphore signals at Lugton and some fine scenery. This was filmed during the brief period when some of these workings travelled via Barrhead before being re-routed via Killwinning and Barassie - as covered in our full length ‘Taking Stock’ programme.

EUSTON-WATFORD JUNCTION on Virgin Pendolino 390126: After leaving Euston on ‘Line X’ and climbing Camden bank, the WCML runs alongside the busy Watford DC Lines, past Willesden Junction and Wembley Yard. North of Bushey the Pendolino tilts at an impressive 110mph before passing through Watford Junction. This is a view of this fascinating route from the Down Fast Line and compliments that of the Up Slow Line as featured in our ‘GBAC’ programme.

READING-BASINGSTOKE on 66082: This journey starts on the western approaches to the newly-remodelled Reading. After passing under the new Reading Viaduct onto the remodelled Reading West curve, this DB Cargo intermodal service briefly joins the Berks & Hants route to pass through Reading West station. At Southcote Junction the train takes the former GWR?route through Mortimer and Bramley before joining the South Western Main Line at Basingstoke.

Seventeen years ago we released our ‘Vac Attack’ cab ride programme, which featured the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow to Crewe. Thanks to the generous assistance of GB Railfreight, we have finally been able to complete the remaining 158 miles of this fascinating route. As was the case with ‘Vac Attack’ (which featured Class 50s) this programme also features authentic heritage WCML traction which regularly worked the route in BR days – a Class 86 AC electric. The locomotive is 86101, which is owned by the AC Locomotive Group and is on long term hire to GBRf. The loco was having a rare break from its Caledonian sleeper empty stock duties, working the Crewe to Euston leg of GB Railfreight’s ‘Absent Shunter’ charity train on 13th August of this year.

The route south from Crewe is via Stafford and the Trent Valley (Tamworth and Nuneaton) to Rugby. From there the train travels through Long Buckby to Northampton before re-joining the main line at Hanslope Junction. The journey south continues through Milton Keynes, Leighton Buzzard and Tring before entering the London suburbs where it passes Watford Junction, Wembley yard and Willesden TMD before reaching its destination at London Euston.

Four days, 2,000 miles, 18 locos, and numerous ground-breaking ‘firsts’ by several locomotive classes in locations many thought impossible. If anybody could do it, GB Railfreight could - this was quite simply the railtour of the year. This DVD is the inside story of the GBRf 2018 ‘Out of the Ordinary’ charity train and how it all happened.

As well as featuring lineside footage of the train as it made its way around England, Scotland and South Wales, there are scenes from the driving cabs on the fourth and final day of the tour.

Introduced by GBRf Managing Director John Smith, the programme also includes interviews with the key people that planned the ambitious itinerary that raised a staggering £145,000 for charity.

The tour set off from London Victoria to Bristol on Thursday September 20th behind 66782 before heading into South Wales with a pair of Class 73/9s. That produced the first Class 73-hauled passenger train into Bridgend and the day ended with the first ever Class 87-hauled passenger train on the Great Western Main Line from Didcot into Paddington.

Day 2 started with Class 20s heading out of London Euston for a spin around Bedfordshire and Kent, while the evening’s entertainment featured the first ever Class 92 to work out of Waterloo International…which later arrived at Blackpool North!

Day 3 saw the unlikely combination of Colas Rail’s 56113 and 73107 & 73141 head over the low level section of the North Clyde Line before heading onto West Highland Line to Fort William. In keeping with the name of the tour, 73141 actually led the train into the West Highland terminus. The 56 then hauled the tour back to Glasgow after which the two 73s hauled the train over the Forth Bridge!

The fourth and final day saw the Class 73s working out of Glasgow Central for a trip to Paisley St James…and then back into Glasgow Central. This cab ride footage must rank as the most bizarre we have ever filmed! The charity train then headed back south with 47749 as far as Carlisle, where a pair Freightliner Class 86s hauled the train over Shap to Crewe. Another traction change saw 50007 & 50049 take charge of the penultimate leg of the tour which travelled via Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Coventry and High Wycombe before reaching Hanwell. The final leg was most definitely ‘out of the ordinary’ as 73107 & 73141 hauled the tour the final eight miles into London Paddington – producing an extraordinary end to an extraordinary tour.

To celebrate 20 years since the release of the very first Power Hour programme, this latest addition to this popular series has all the ingredients of its seven predecessors. If you have seen any of them, you will know that this one features a variety of main line diesel locos hard at work on the national rail network. And we do mean hard at work! Each scene meets one or more of the following criteria - full-on power, stiff gradients, or standing starts. With some added clag and wheelslip, the result is a series of spectacular scenes, filmed over an eight year period from 2012 to 2019. It features main line traction - old and new - in a variety of liveries on a diverse range of workings from around the country. Here are a few examples…

FREIGHT WORKINGS: Colas Class 56s and 60s hard at work on timber traffic over the Settle-Carlisle line, 60044 performing a standing start on the 3,000 tonne Lindsey-Kingsbury tanks, extraordinary non-stop thrash from 37716 shunting at Peak Forest, 50008 thundering over Lickey summit hauling a rail grinder, Gerrards Cross tunnel being blasted by 20311 & 20132 on a London Underground S Stock move, 68023 on full power hauling the short-lived but heavy Barrow Docks to Drigg aggregates, 70816 performing a standing start at Dunblane with the Oxwellmains-Aberdeen cement, 31452 storming away from Leicester...and 37602 & 37609 staggering up Old Hill bank on the Wentloog-Daventry Tesco boxes!

PASSENGER WORKINGS & RAILTOURS: the unusual combination of 33207 & 37516 working in multiple over Copy Pit, lively performances from DRS Class 37/4s on Cumbrian coast and East Anglian passenger work, 55022 blasting through Sleights on the tranquil Esk Valley line, 40145 climbing to Copy Pit summit, Maybach music from D1015 Western Champion, 50007 & 50049 climbing Rattery bank heading for Penzance, 37409 blasting its way up the steeply graded Preston Docks branch, 47810 & 47501 in multiple powering a Statesman charter, Class 40 D213 Andania pounding away from Blea Moor on its first main line passenger train in 34 years...and 37518 & 37706 & 37669 all working in multiple, storming out of Crewe!

POWER HOUR 8 features 15 different locomotive classes - 20, 31, 33, 37, 40, 47, 50, 52, 55, 56, 57, 60, 66, 68 and 70 on a variety of passenger and freight duties, hard at work on Britain’s national rail network.
