The English Electric Type 3s have worked on the main line from their introduction in 1960s to the present day. These icons on the Modernisation Plan have worked everything from express passenger to pick up freight. This programme explores these ‘maids of all work’ through the years.

Introduction into Service. The class from their introduction on the Eastern Region and later on the Eastern, Scottish & North Eastern regions using archive film.

The 1970s. The Class 37s before and after TOPS with film from around the network. Trans Pennine services, Eastern Region duties, coal in South Wales, the Central Wales line and freights in the North East are all featured.

Scotland. The 37/4s at work North of the Border in the early 1980s. Features the Far North & West Highand lines.

Sub Classes. The creation of various sub classes comprising the 37/3s, 37/4s, 37/6s, 37/7s and the re-engined 37/9s. Plus of course the 37/0s, the original locos.

Privatisation and New Liveries.
The new liveries and operators for the class including EWS, Mainline and Loadhaul.

Direct Rail Services. A look at the locomotives in action with DRS with scenes of the 37s before transfer to the new operator. Includes the various liveries and duties in recent months.

South Wales encompassed an amazing variety of railways and landscapes. The main line through Cardiff hosted services to London. The Valleys with their spectacular railways served an area dominated by ‘King Coal’. Swansea had a mix of lines and motive power. The South West coast was served by sleepy seaside branches.

The Gateway to Wales
The Severn Tunnel and the route along the Estuary converging on Severn Tunnel Junction in steam days. Freight and passenger traffic is featured on a range of duties.

The Motive Power A recap on the motive power scene & the contrasting locomotive types serving the routes through North, Mid & South Wales.

The Main Line through Cardiff Steam workings through Newport & Cardiff and the steam sheds with a wide range of power including 9fs, 56XX tanks and Halls.

The Welsh Valleys The railways and services serving the Valley lines. Crumlin viaduct and the cross valley lines are included along with coal traffic and special trains. Prairies and Panniers feature on passenger and freight.

By LNWR to South Wales The route through Pontardulais to Swansea Victoria plus the lines in the Swansea area including the docks.

To the South West The railways of Carmarthen, freight to Newcastle Emlyn, the Cardigan Branch plus the branches to Cardigan, Pembroke, Milford Haven and Fishguard.
