Ref: KF220D

Price:£19.99

A two-disc DVD programme covering the whole south-bound journey of the Virgin Trains Record Run attempt which departed from Glasgow Central station at 12.37 on 22nd September 2006.

Achieved in 3 hours 55 minutes 27 seconds, the Pendolino non-stop run was the fastest run south-bound from Glasgow to London Euston. The previous record along the 401 mile route was set by the Advanced Passenger Train in 1981.

The special run of the 9 coach Pendolino was arranged by Virgin Trains in conjunction with Railway Magazine and was fully booked with over 400 passengers, raising some £30,000 fro the Virgin Unite charity, Heaven's Angels.

Running time: 240-mins

The DVD has the full background to the run starting at Polmadie depot where the set was prepared the week before to make certain that the attempt was a complete success. We see the crew prepare for the run at Glasgow Central station and the naming of the Pendolino set No. 390047 as Heaven's Angels by Railway Magazines's editor, Nick Pigott.

Recorded from the cab of Class 50 No. 50 022 on 16th.April 1985 on the 09:25 Paddington to Penzance train from Exeter St.Davids to Plymouth.

At the time of the run, Exeter St.Davids was in the process of being resignalled. The East end works had been completed some ten weeks previously and during the preceding weekend the West end semaphore signals had been stripped of their arms. The replacement colour light signals were operative but the track layout they were to control had not alltered. Flagmen were used to control traffic movements and we departed past a red signal.

The train was booked to depart Exeter at 12:22 and arrive at Plymouth at 13:29. However, the 06:28 HST from Bradford was running late and it was arranged for us to stop at Newton Abbott to make a connection with this train. Our Plymouth arrival was at 13:40.

Please note: There is no commentary other the cab conversations which are not always audible above the sound of the train.

This cab ride was recorded from the cab of Class 47 47517 "Andrew Carnegie" of Inverness Shed on 23rd.September 1985 on the 15:35 from King's Cross to York.

The train was the only locomotive hauled passenger train scheduled in the 1985-86 East Coast Main Line timetables and it ceased on 28th.September 1985. The journey is particularly poignant as it shows the progess being made on the electrification of the line at the time. Very few wires and masts were in place so this Cab Ride has quite unobstructed views of the infrastructure. As we pass through Peterborough we see the depot handling electrification works.

We thank Traction Inspector: J Matron. Drivers: H Coultish (Doncaster), D.Austin (Doncaster) and Guard D.Hodson and the crews concerned for their help and informative commentary on route.

Note: there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.
