Today we are in Ostrava near the Polish border in the northeast. Before the mid 18th Century Ostrava was just a village on an important trade route between north and south Europe. In 1763 black coal was discovered – an industrial boom followed, Ostrava became ‘Steel City”. Modern Ostrava is a sprawling urban mass without the medieval centre that you would find in cities such as Wroclaw or Olomouc. We left TTR161 at Svinov, one of the original villages, now the western gateway to the Ostrava metropolitan area. While there is an alternative route for freight trains to and from Slovakia, all freight trains to or from Poland must travel through Svinov or face reversal. Perhaps more importantly the main classification yard for the Ostrava Region, Ostrava-Mariánské, lies between Svinov and Ostrava main station.

Ostrava hl. is slightly unusual: it’s situated on a junction, in German this is known as a Keilbahnhof. The station platforms are V shaped with the station buildings in the centre. We also visit the city, view the trams and suburban stations. In a polycentric municipal area tramways probably work better than a railway for local journeys. Then we travel on to the border station at Bohumín. Here we see nearly as many trains from PKP as CD! Traction and stock throughout is incredibly varied from the latest CityElefants to locomotives that have been in service for 50 years!

Today we are travelling with PKP InterCity from Gdansk on the Baltic coast to the capital Warsaw in the interior. Our train is TLK 53106 which started from Gdynia at 06.19. The time is now 11.49 and we are about to depart from Ciechanów station on the final leg of our journey to Warsaw. While the middle of the three chapters covering this run was largely rural, this chapter takes us through an urban and industrial landscape. This section is a modernised railway busy with long distance commuter traffic that extends 90km from the capital. Our first call in Warsaw is Warszawa Wschodnia that lies east of the Vistula, the river that divides the city. Here we change our locomotive to an EP09 for the last 5km to Central Station. It’s not as crazy as it sounds -the train will continue south and needs a 160kph locomotive. Filmed in HD. Narrated.

The Balkan war broke out in 1992 and Yugoslavia disintegrated. For European railways this created a huge ‘no go’ area and diversion of traffic away from the war zone. By 2004 Hungary was in the EU – the transport map of Europe was being redrawn. The effect on Austria was an increase in the importance of the Westbahn at the expense of the Tauernbahn- the railway from Salzburg to Slovenia- as freight traffic for Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania was re-routed through Budapest. OBB freight division needed capacity for ever-increasing transit freight while the passenger business craved speed over its principal mainline. The painfully slow modernisation of the OBB had unexpectedly become a European priority – money was found – a new westbahn railway was built. This doubled the corridor capacity and gave the possibility of sustained high-speed running for passenger trains. Twenty years after the war started trains are running over the new railway. This is an exceptional line because it is both high-speed and multi-functional: 200kph, soon perhaps 250kph, RailJets, 160- 200kph ECs, Regional trains and 100kph freight all run over the new infrastructure. We follow the line from St Pölten to the New Central through-station, view the important connections between the old and new network, see how the new station is bedding in and what has happened to the old icon of Vienna the Westbahnhof. Finland is the northernmost country within the EU and its capital Helsinki the most northerly metropolitan area in the world! The small city, just 600,000 lies on the Gulf of Finland 80km north of Tallinn, 300km from St Petersburg in Russia. Our train is IC 47 it’s Monday 3rd June 2013 and the time is 10.06 We are in the cab of a VR Sr2 better known to most perhaps as a Lok 2000 or SBB Re 460. The run starts with a multi-track mainline where we run parallel with a sister IC service on its way to Turku. Through the suburbs we pass commuter train after commuter train including the new FLIRTS, Swiss built but modified for Finnish winters. This is the line to Tampere and Oulu in the far north, one of only two continuous double track lines in Finland. Ticket to Ride No.187: VR IC Cabride+ Hameenlinna to Tampere and Parkano

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Today we undertake a journey with VR IC 47 it’s Monday 3rd June 2013, we are at Hämeenlinna. The time is 11.11 and we are ready to depart on our journey to Tampere and Parkano. This is the mainline to Tampere and onward to Oulu, double track as far as the junction for Pori- the port on the Gulf of Bothnia and Finland’s most important export facility for paper products. We pass Tampere marshalling yard where wagons are classified: north Oulu and Pori or east towards Russia. Tampere has a population of nearly 220,000 making it the largest non-coastal city in the Nordic area. It’s located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Since the two lakes differ in level by 18 metres, the rapids linking them have been an important power source throughout the city’s history, most recently for generating electricity. Tampere is dubbed the "Manchester of Finland" for its industrial past as the former centre of Finnish industry. We continue north past the Tampere pleasure park famous for the highest tower in the Nordic Region and then run to Parkano on the mainline to Oulu. The run is made in fine spring weather. Narrated, Filmed in HD.
