The Czech Republic, once part of the Austro Hungarian Empire then the Soviet Empire, became an independent country on the 1st January 1992. Just seven years later it was in the EU. Now separated from Slovakia the standard gauge rail network is nearly 9,550km in length, about a third is electrified. At the time of the fall of the wall the railways of Czechoslovakia were probably the slowest and most under-invested in central Europe. With the help of EU funding and a vibrant economy the railways have changed! The infrastructure on the lines radiating from Prague (the capital) and the transit routes- north/south Poland to Slovakia and Hungary, and east/west Ukraine to Germany- are modern railways. Liberalisation has produced a colourful railway with new entrants like Student Agency competing head on with the incumbent Ceské dráhy or CD. Freight is also very varied. To the traditional transport of minerals from the Silesian industrial belt can be added agricultural products, the automotive industry and transit traffic. Because of coal, chemicals and FIAT in Poland - PKP Cargo’s newest locomotives seem to spend more time in the Czech Republic than on their native metals! We start our exploration in the south east quarter centred on Olomouc. With lots of varied traction and stock (including the new Russian sleeping car train from Nice to Moscow) there is a huge amount to enjoy. Filmed in HD.

We head south from Olomouc towards Austria – we start at Prerov an industrial town of 50,000 situated at the southern end of a triangular junction: west to Olomouc and Prague – east to Ostrava and Poland. This is Czech transit corridor 2 (TEN23): Sweden and Poland – to Austria and Italy / Slovenia- one of the busiest international freight corridors in the Union. We visit the towns of: Valašské Mezirící, Kromeríž, Otrokowice, Staré Mesto u Uherského Hradište, Veselí nad Moravou, Hodonin- the first major town in the 25kv zone- and Breclav. While we don’t visit Tychy – it’s in Poland – we do get to see the exports of the FIAT car plant there. PANDAs, FIAT500s and the Ford Ka are made there and over 90% are exported - most of these by rail. For these impressive trains PKP Cargo provide the traction, a Siemens MS, all the way to Breclav. Breclav is where TEN23 splits, with branches to Vienna or to Bratislava. We have a look at freight being classified here and sent on its way to Slovakia and Hungary or Austria and Italy. Filmed in HD.

Today we start in the Republic’s second city Brno. We approach from the south over the first steam powered railway of the Austro Hungarian Empire. In Brno we look at the extensive tram and trolleybus system, the main station Brno hl, and the suburban network before discussing the prospects, and implications, of a new station on a new site. From hl we move north to Malomerický yard the largest classification yard in the Czech Republic. Here we watch trains from across Eastern Europe being re-marshalled and trip freights being prepared for local duties. While Malomerický is a relatively modern facility, it has one or two throwbacks to an earlier age that we think you will enjoy! From Brno we travel to Znojmo a small town on the Czech Austrian border near the Austrian town of Retz. Here the electrification is at 15kv AC and OBB City Shuttle trains now work a regular service to Vienna. There is also considerable cross border freight, some very short runs while some wagons head for Kledering and international connections. We continue further west to the home of beer in the Republic- Ceské Budejovice. The town of 100,000 is also an important rail cross roads Plzen to Brno and Prague to Linz. We look at both services and the international freight over this important but largely unrecognised TEN freight corridor. Filmed in HD

A special tri-border edition where we spend time at one of those delightful locations where three railway administrations come together and cohabit. Breclav is where Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia meet. We look at Breclav then move steadily south- not over the Nordbahn to Vienna but over the direct route to Bratislava. An oft forgotten railway, but it shouldn’t be as it teems with international freight and long distance passenger traffic: on this line you will see trains from Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, plus the ‘usual suspects’! All three countries with borders near Breclav have substantial chemical industries nearby: Slovakia has SLOVNAFT at Bratislava, Austria has OMV south-east of Vienna, and the Czech Republic has UNIPETROL / PARMO at Pardubice. To these should be added the Hungarian MOL group – now owners of SLOVNAFT – who refine and crack near Budapest. It should therefore come as no surprise to see a considerable volume of tank wagon activity both by trainload and wagonload. This includes the transport of chlorine – a very dangerous chemical – but one essential to the plastics industry. After visiting the small Slovakian towns along the way: Kúty, Malacky, Zohor (where we find an ‘SNCF’ Alstom BB75100- a PRIMA diesel at work!) and Devínska Nová Ves? (home of VW in Slovakia) we reach Bratislava. We look round the historic centre and admire the trams before visiting the main stations and the city’s marshalling yard at Východ. Filmed in HD
