Narrow Gauge at Work No.37 - Industrial Narrow Gauge Survivors (78-mins)

Although the traditional industrial narrow gauge railway is nearly extinct, there are isolated locations even in 2016 that still rely on this form of transport.

Using footage from the last couple of years and occasional archive footage, a few of the remaining industrial narrow gauge systems are visited in a number of locations through Europe. Meyer Holsen Tileworks in Germany still uses a small Diema loco to transport skips of clay. Mixnitz in Austria is home to a unique electric Lokalbahn still transporting magnesite. In Weardale, England, Rogerley Mine still uses a small battery loco on a part time basis. A classic French brickworks at Briqueterie Chimot still runs, using loco hauled trains on 2 narrow gauges. The peatworks at Hatzte operates one of the more picturesque peat railways in Germany. Back in England again, and recent footage shows coal being hauled to the surface at Hopewell Colliery. The DVD ends with the last feldbahn running in Austria, at Ziegelei Danreiter which runs a 600mm gauge railway for the transport of clay.

Other locations are seen during the course of the video.

Over the recent years Klasmann (and more recently Klasmann-Deilmann since the two firms merged) have operated many narrow gauge railways at various locations in north western Germany for the transport of peat. This DVD documents the remaining systems and also highlighs a number of the systems that have ceased over the years.

The 900mm gauge system at Vehnemoor is visited as well as the 600mm gauge system at Sedelsberg. The large network of 900mm gauge lines from Schöninghsdorf in the north, to Gross Heseper and Dalum in the south is also covered. We are grateful to Klasmann-Deilmann for allowing filming inside the yards and works complexes at these locations. The bulk of the film uses footage taken in 2016 with archive footage over 20 years old looking at earlier Klasmann works around Twist and Papenburg.

Skips, Horses and Hard Work: The Early years (58-mins)

Skips, Horses and Hard Work: The Early years (58-mins)

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: JS126D

Price:£11.99

In 2006, 2 small locomotives were purchased with the intention of building a short railway of under a half mile in length, to move horse manure from stables to a temporary muck heap for composting. Although having visited many industrial narrow gauge locations in the past, there was little or no experience of actual track building or loco restoration.

Following a number of interested enquiries regarding how the railway was built and asking for more details, this DVD has been made as the first of 2 DVDs about the Springfield Agricultural Railway. This first production looks at the construction of the railway and obtaining and restoring the first locos on the line, and running the first trains.

Via video footage and pictures over the first 3-4 years, the viewer can see how some of the obstacles were overcome, how the tracklaying was done, obtaining the locos, the locos bursting into life for the first time in many years, obtaining and building rolling stock, and various other activies.

This is the second of 2 DVDs about the Springfield Agricultural Railway. This release captures the day to day operations of the railway, which is used for moving horse manure, timber, and performing general maintenance on fencing and the paddocks.

The video has been taken from 2009 to 2013 typically using one of the 2 working Moës locos or the Wingrove and Rogers battery loco. Other locos such as Alan Keef No.9 and a railcar converted from a Wickham Target Trolley are also seen breifly, with views of the Spoorijzer loco under restoration, and the arrival of Jane, the ex-Ffestiniog Motor Rail.

During May 2001, all three of the preserved main line steam locos in Serbia were in action on several lines south of Belgrade, in Serbia. Footage of all three locos class 01, class 33, and class 51 is included on the video. Some industrial locations are also visited. The last steam worked passenger railway in Europe at the Jagodina Wire Factory is seen, along with the JZ Wagon Works at Smederevo. Both these locations are still worked by Class 62 0-6-0 tank locos. Collieries still using steam are seen at Vreoci and Kostolac with 900mm gauge railways.

The revived operation on the 760mm gauge railway at Mokra Gora is filmed with the first 8km of track laid by this stage. The last steam locomotive repair shop on the Yugoslav Railways is filmed, and the first steam test of another class 62 is followed after overhaul at the works.
