A Bristol LH ride on the Isle of Wight

A Bristol LH ride on the Isle of Wight

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1025D

Price:£17.95

The narrow lanes on the picturesque Isle of Wight are well suited to the Bristol LH. Southern Vectis bought some late examples to cover routes on the western side of the island but they also saw service in the Cowes and Newport area.

Former 202 is now preserved, and still lives on the island. We took it out one Sunday to relive some of the routes it operated during it’s time in service with Southern Vectis. One of the highlights of this video sees 202 operating the 42 from Alum Bay to the Needles Battery, now the haunt of converted open top Bristol VRTs.

We use a VRT as our not so steady camera stand as 202 makes the journey to the top! We also see 202 negotiate the narrow entrance to Cowes pontoon, then onto Newport to operate local services and the 48 to Carisbrooke Castle. We complete our ‘ride’ on 202 to Yarmouth, where we started the day.

We then take more ‘rides’ when we pay a visit to the Bus Museum's Autumn Running Day, held in October 2001. FLF 611 (CDL479C) shows off its new paint having just been repainted into its original Tilling livery. 611 goes to Newport bus station, and then on route 1A to Cowes. There is also a ride on cream liveried VRT ex. 669 (UDL669S) and Solent Blue Line liveried ex. 637 (NDL637M). Additional footage shows many of the visiting vehicles.

Another Ride on the Isle of Wight

Another Ride on the Isle of Wight

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1016D

Price:£17.95

Following the success of our first ‘RIDE ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT’ video. ‘ANOTHER RIDE ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT’ gives you even more delights of bus travel from a bygone age.

This video programme features, amongst other things, the annual ‘Running Day’ organised by the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum, which took place on a sunny day in October 2000. You can ‘ride’ on Bristol FLF 611 (CDL479C) to Cowes and back. Also take a ‘ride’ on 203 a Bristol LHS, and see the ‘visitors’ in action as well. Lodekka 563 also takes to the road, so why not come along for another ‘ride’! We briefly chart the adventures ‘overseas’ of vehicles from the Museum, when they visited the Southsea and Winchester rallies.

To bring things up to date – we feature some of the operations of Southern Vectis during the summer of 2000. Then make a return trip to see the new liveries, and open-top offering for the 2001 season.

To finish off, there is a chance to look around the Museum – better still, come and have a look for yourself – and remember buying this video helps the Museum.

A special thank you to Richard Newman for the cine film used in this programme and thanks also go to the Museum for making most of this video possible.

Bus Rides on the Isle of Wight

Bus Rides on the Isle of Wight

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1051D

Price:£17.95

We continue our series of videos featuring the buses on the Isle of Wight with this programme – Bus Rides on the Isle of Wight. Our journey starts at one of the ever popular ‘Running Days’, this time October 2002. We see vehicles arriving on Newport Quay, home to the Isle of Wight Bus Museum. Vehicles from most parts of the country attend both preserved from a bygone era to present day buses currently in revenue earning service. We feature a ride on a recently delivered Volvo B7TL contrasting nicely with the old order of Bristol Lodekka’s K’s and MW’s native to the island as well as visiting Routemasters and a whole host of other types.

We then move forward to July 2003 with an update of the present Southern Vectics operations. We call at all the main bus centres on the island such as Ryde, Newport, Shanklin, not forgetting the picturesque Alum Bay and Yarmouth. All types are recorded including vehicles in ‘Route Rouge’ and ‘Explorer’ liveries as well as Westbrook Travel and a guest appearance of 702 (CDL 899), the 1939 Bristol K5G.

Moving onto April 2004 we ride on the newly converted to open top Leyland Olympian 743 (K743 ODL) from Alum Bay to the Old Needles Battery. Spectacular scenery is witnessed as we ascend the switchback road to the top. There is some spectacular footage of 743 and 742 her sister in action.

Finishing the programme we attend the April 2004 Running Day at the Bus Museum. Again featuring some absolute gems in action on ‘The Quay’. We take a ride out on a former Southern Vectis (now preserved in Solent Blue Line livery) Bristol VRT series 2 to Haven Street station to see a steam train leave. Two further rides are taken on the preserved ex.Crosville Bristol L5G (KFM 767), a type once familiar to the island’s roads. Pure nostalgia!

We would like to thank Paul Savage for supplying this spectacular cover photograph, and to Leo Roberts for his help with the production.

Ride on the Isle of Wight

Ride on the Isle of Wight

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1004D

Price:£17.95

Ride on the Isle of Wight gives you the opportunity to relive the days of bus travel in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Filmed on the Isle of Wight mainly during the Running Days organised by the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum.

You can experience the sites and sounds of a 1962 Bristol Lodekka FS on a short route to Carrisbrooke Castle, and then on a longer journey to the Yarmouth ferry terminal and back. SDL268 is a 1959 Bristol Lodekka LD also takes the picturesque journey to Carrisbrooke. If your interest is in single decker's – take a ride on FDL927D, a 1966 Bristol MW for the long and interesting ride on an afternoon tour to Brook.

If you think this video is all Bristol vehicles, well its not! GDL764 is a 1950 Leyland PD2 with Leyland body and previously operated by Seaveiw Services on the Island. We take a ride on this excellently restored vehicle to see the Castle at Carrisbrooke. Another Lodekka to watch out for is TDL998, a 1960, FS example.

All the ‘Bristol’ vehicles were previously operated by the Southern Vectis company.

During our ‘ride’ on the island we take a look at the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum on a ‘Running Day’, with visiting vehicles and some of the exhibits. Unfortunately the video does not do justice to them – you must come and see for yourself!

Many thanks go to the Museum for making this video possible.

Seaviews on the Isle of Wight

Seaviews on the Isle of Wight

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1011D

Price:£17.95

There are many ‘seaviews’ on the Isle of Wight, this video deals with two aspects. Firstly, ex. ‘SEAVIEW SERVICES’, GDL764, an all Leyland Titan PD2. She celebrated her 50th Birthday on 7th May 2000, this video was made to mark the occasion.

We see her on her special day running her former route from Ryde to Seaview. Ex. ‘SOUTHERN VECTIS’ Bristol MW 806 helped out carrying extra passengers and acted as a camera stand for the return trip! GDL764 is usually on show at the Isle of Wight Bus Museum.

The second aspect of ‘seaviews’ is that of the open top bus operations on the island. We first look at Route 42, home to the ‘SOUTHERN VECTIS’ Lodekka LD open top fleet. The 1999 views show them in all cream livery, and video shots this year in their smart apple green and cream guise. There is spectacular footage of them climbing to the Battery for views of the Needles and the English south coast. Route 44 is next, operating in Sandown and Shanklin. Here we see the recently converted Bristol VR’s, also painted apple green and cream – and running for the ‘VILLAGE BUS COMPANY’, climbing up from the Esplanade at Shanklin, running through the old village, and at many other points on the route. The 88 service is operated by ‘WESTBROOK TRAVEL’, and is a coastal and inland route. The vehicles we see running the 2000 season are a pair of mark 2 Bristol VRT’s, one a former ‘UNITED AUTO’, the other from the ‘WESTERN NATIONAL’ group.

We conclude with a montage of shots of the ‘Old Girl’ – CDL899, who celebrated her 60th Birthday in 1999. So sit back and enjoy the views!

Southern Vectis - CDL 899 A 60th Birthday Celebration

Southern Vectis - CDL 899 A 60th Birthday Celebration

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Price:£17.95

CDL899 is a very remarkable survivor. A Bristol K5G with 56 seat bodywork by Eastern Coachworks built in 1939, she remains on the Isle of Wight with her original owner and operator, Southern Vectis, sixty years and 775,000 miles later.

Originally a “highbridge” double decker, and used predominantly on Ryde - Newport - Cowes services conveying shipyard workers. The bus was converted to open top form in 1959 for seasonal operation in the Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor area. For many years she was the regular bus on service 44 between Sandown Zoo and Shanklin Esplanade, and then for a period in the early 1980’s worked a scenic circular route from Ryde, but in recent years she has been used on service 42 from Yarmouth.

To commemorate her 60th anniversary, she was repainted in original pre war apple green livery, and two island tours, featured in this production, were ran in July 1999, taking in some of her former routes, and the present day open top service from Yarmouth to Alum Bay and the Needles, a route which features spectacular coastal scenery.

A special Thank You to John Woodhams and CDL 899 for making this film possible.

Southern Vectis - Farewell VR

Southern Vectis - Farewell VR

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1007D

Price:£17.95

On Saturday 29th January 2000 a tour was organised to say farewell to the Bristol VRT’s that served the Isle of Wight with Southern Vectis.

This video follows 685 (DPX685W) on that day completing a tour of the island. We call at Ryde, Ventnor, Yarmouth and Newport and see 685 in a number of locations where the VR’s ran.

SVOC operated 68 new, and 13 secondhand VR’s from 1969 onwards, a number of them can be seen in the ‘Photo Gallery’ on this programme. The first VR, 622 (NDL490G) is seen being restored from a treelopper at Ryde depot. For added interest we take a quick spin on RELL6G 863 (TDL563K), still in service with SVOC, also at Ryde. Look out for preserved Bristol FS6G TDL998 making a brief appearance at Yarmouth. 3 former SVOC VR’s are filmed in action with SOLENT BLUE LINE. It’s not quite farewell to the VR, because 681 is converted to open-top to run along former stable-mates with the newly formed ‘VILLAGE BUS CO’.

Thanks must go to Richard Newman for driving on the day. Also other members of the IOW Bus Museum that helped to produce this video, commemorating over 30 years of VR service on the Isle of Wight.

Southern Vectis - The Last Lodekka?

Southern Vectis - The Last Lodekka?

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1018D

Price:£17.95

The Bristol Lodekka has enjoyed a long life on the Isle of Wight. From the first deliveries of Mark 1 LD’s in 1954, the introduction of the FS in 1960, to the final FLF’s in the late 1960’s.

Some of the oldest LD’s have enjoyed a ‘second’ life operating in the form of Open Toppers. In the latter years, their domain was that of route number 42 from Freshwater to the Needles Battery. When new in the 1950’s, they operated in a livery of Tilling green and cream, they later ran in NBC green and white. Then in OT form, there were a number of schemes from white and green, blue and green to all over Tilling cream, then to their final scheme of apple green and cream, matching the ‘Old Girl’ – the 1939 K5G reviving the original livery from the 1930’s.

This video programme follows 500 (MDL955) on the ‘possible’ farewell tour of the Island. Filmed on the 12th of August 2001, we follow her around the Island from Ryde depot to Bembridge, Sandown, Ventnor, Newport and out to Brook. We then take the 42 to the Needles Battery. Our camera rides on 500 as well as filming her through the picturesque villages, towns and the landscape of the Island. There is a Picture Gallery of the Lodekka’s in service with Southern Vectis. The video then reviews their operations in recent years.

Thanks go to John Woodhams for arranging the trip and driving 500 on a most enjoyable, memorable and historic tour – on a vehicle type that has served the Island for some 47 years.

Southern Vectis - Double Birthday Celebration

Southern Vectis - Double Birthday Celebration

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: IT1113D

Price:£16.99

2009 is a landmark year for the bus industry on the Isle of Wight, so we would like to welcome you to this special video programme to celebrate the 70th Birthday of two Bristol K5G open top double deckers and the 80th Birthday of Southern Vectis, the main bus company on the Isle of Wight. One of the Bristol K5Gs – 602 (CDL 899) is still owned and operated by Southern Vectis making it the oldest bus still operating with it’s original owner. 703 (DDL 50) is in preservation, but has come over to the island to take part in the celebrations.

The first part of this programme takes place at the ‘Island Buses Running Day’ held at the Bus Museum on the 10th May 2009. There is plenty of action on ‘The Quay’ and on the road as our cameras go out and about with the vehicles.

We ride on Bristol LD 563 (SDL 268) with 703 (DDL 50) – so you can experience what it is like on both buses. Bedford OB 216 (FDL 676) is also sampled for a ride around Newport and through the bus station. Look out for the Bristol VR in Damory Coaches livery, UDL 673S as this bus was delivered new to the island in April 1978, but was later swapped with 5 of it’s running mates for 6 convertible Bristol VRs from Hants & Dorset in 1979. One of these convertibles, UFX 858S, is now preserved and attended the running day. Now you can see them operating together on service from the Museum. One of the highlights of this section of the video is the trip to Godshill with 602 and 703. We travel back on 602 and film 703 from the rear platform, fantastic views of both the countryside and of the K5G!

The second part of the programme records the ‘Bustival’ event organised by Southern Vectis to celebrate with the public their 80th Birthday. The event was held at Havenstreet – home of the Isle of Wight steam railway. Again our cameras were out to film the action for you to enjoy. The first section is of the vehicles taking up position on the rally field, mostly in date order. A good chance to see the buses in detail as they are moved into place. We then go out on the road with Bristol FLF, 611 (CDL 479C) for a run down to the Bus Museum on the Quay.

The run back to Havenstreet is on board birthday girl 703 (DDL 50) – just listen to the five cylinder Gardner engine! Plenty of road action is filmed at Havenstreet as well as the departure of the exhibits at the end of a most enjoyable special day. We hope you enjoyed the Celebrations as much as we enjoyed filming them!
