European Railway: Issue 52 - November/December 2013

SWITZERLAND - any journey along the BLS mainline offers the onlooker a wide selection of motive power even in these days of creeping modernisation. The variety of locomotive classes to be seen in this study of operations at the north and southern ends of Spiez station, show just how much the railways in Switzerland have changed over the

years. We see the new BLS ‘Lötchberger’ Class 535 electric multiple units in action, together with an older generation class 565 unit and class 425 locos on freight and passenger services. Class 460 and 465 represent the powerful development of electric traction from the 1990s. New class 185 & 485 TRAXX F140 AC are seen on freight services and so too is an older class 436. German (DB) ICEs are filmed working on through services from Germany to Interlaken. One of the main highlights is the sight of the latest Class 187 electric fitted with a ‘last mile’ diesel engine, seen here on test (see photo above right).

GERMANY – we visit the 750mm-gauge ‘Fichtelbergbahn’ steam-operated line in Saxony, to witness German narrow-gauge steam in action. We follow trains on the route between Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal through spectacular woodland and hillside scenery. Filmed in July 2013.

POLAND - two lines are featured to the east of the industrial city of Katowice as we look at modern-day passenger and freight operations, including the Russian-Gauge LHS railway. Local passenger services are witnessed being operated by class EN57 and EN71 multiple units. We see diesels in the shape of ST44 (M62), Tem2 and SM42 and electrics from a varied stable, including: EP-07, ET22, ET41, ET21, class 182 & 186 - either light engine or on freight services.

FRANCE – a study of passenger and freight services to the south of Dijon, close to the marshalling yard at Gevrey. A whole host of train-types are seen including: TGV, z27500, BB7200, BB22200, BB25500, BB26000, BB27000, BB37000, BB69400, BB67200 Vossloh G2000 and ‘Euro’ and ECR class 66. This is a busy location and popular with enthusiasts, our two camera crews meant that none of the action was missed on the freight and avoider lines.

GERMANY - the final section takes us to Southern Bavaria. The expected arrival of new TRAXX ME class 245 diesels to Kempten depot will likely see the end of the class 218 diesels that operate in the area, so we captured the current day operations in our visit during July 2013. The rolling hills offer superb vantage points as we find class 612 DMUs, class 223 and 218 at work on a variety of passenger services. We also cover the Füssen branch with some excellent mountain scenery as the back-drop.

AUSTRIA - a visit is made in superb cloudless weather to the Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge line that runs from Jenbach to Mayrhofen. As well as current diesel operations we follow one of the highlights of the Summer season, the steam-hauled tourist train to Mayrhofen featuring 0-8-2 locomotive number 4. We also see freight operations with standard-gauge wagons being hauled on special transporter wagons.

ITALY – two areas are studied which have the Alps as a backdrop. We call into Belluno to sample diesel operations on a typical rural line with D445 locos and class 668 units, as well as current-day observations on lines radiating out of Novara. Classes 632, 652, 464, EB710, 663 & SBB 484 are all seen.

SLOVAKIA - superb weather and high mountains once again dominate the filming as we study traffic on the busy mainline linking Kosice with Bratislava in the north of the country. With the snow-covered Tatra Mountains as a constant back-drop we see passenger trains headed by class 163, 362, 363 and 350 as well as freight traffic powered by class 183 and double-unit class 131 locos often with class 183 providing assistance. This is a fascinating and photogenic piece of railway running through superb open countryside.

FRANCE – a look at the mainline north of Orleans on the ‘racetrack’ section to Etampes and onwards to Paris. This is a near 100-percent loco-operated line and we witness a variety of passenger and freight services finished off in a wide cross-section of liveries and colour schemes. Classes BB7200, BB26000 and BB27000 dominate the motive power seen - and once again, all filmed in glorious summer sunshine!

GERMANY - the final section in this programme takes an extended look at rail operations through the Rhine Valley starting close to Bingen and continuing north to just short of Koblenz. At Bingen we are on the left bank line which sees the majority of passenger services and fast freight. ICE, 101, 120, 143, 185/5, 189, 460 and 628 are all seen here. Moving north along the river we visit such places as Kaub, Bacharach, Oberwesel, Boppard, Lorch and Loreley where some of our long pan shots make the most of the superb scenery and the busy river traffic. Trains are filmed along either side of the river and offer, in addition to those listed above, classes 151, 155, 185, 139, 221, 1116, 484 on non-passenger services with the highlight being preserved and ex-works condition, green-liveried 140 128 on a test run from Koblenz - and all filmed in 2012 and 2013 in splendid sunshine!

European Railway: Issue 46 (Autumn 2012) (82-mins)

European Railway: Issue 46 (Autumn 2012) (82-mins)

Ref: LN3046D

SWITZERLAND:- a look at activity around Landquart in the east of the country. The town hosts the main railway workshops of the Rhätische Bahn and so it is an important location for this extensive metre-gauge network. We witness a number of locomotive-hauled trains, electric multiple units and shunting locomotives in action as they go about their work. We also feature mainline trains on the adjacent standard-gauge SBB line to Chur.

CZECH REPUBLIC:- - there’s snow on the ground as we witness diesel traction on the line just to the south of Jesenik. Classes 754, 751 and 810 appear on passenger and freight.

GERMANY the village station at Blankenheim just west of Halle on the line to Kassel, is our chosen stopover. In this section we witness a mixture of local passenger and long-distance freight activity. Appearing in front of our two cameras are members of class 143, 155, 185, 189, 642, 482 and 701.

SPAIN:- - in this August 2012 section we take a look at the single-track diesel-only mainline north of Murcia. With some spectacular scenery as a backdrop we study class 333 and 334 operations on trains soon to be replaced by more modern rolling stock.

FRANCE:- - a brief look at the diesel line linking Calais with Dunkerque. A diesel multiple unit and two locomotive-hauled freight trains make up the scene, including an ECR class 66.

BELGIUM - 2012 will be remembered for the withdrawal from service of class 23, 26 and class 20 electric locomotives, some of which were first introduced in 1955! The class 20s date more recently, from 1975, and it is these that we capture on film for the very last time as they were in the final few months of operation. Electric multiple, units, class 77 and class 28 locomotives also make up our study of passenger and freight operations on the mainline between Antwerpen and Gent.

POLAND- more diesel action from rural lines in the west of the country close to the German border. The line east of Gubin is our first featured section of track: here we capture freight-only operations with class 232 and ST43 providing the power. Next we move to Zagañ as a diesel railcar mixes it with a class ST43-powered freight.

AUSTRIA:- our final section comes from the tortuous Semmering Pass mainline to the south-west of Vienna. A new tunnel by-passing the mountain route has just been started, so we thought it a good idea to look at current day operations. Classes 1044, 1142,1144, 1116 and 4020 are the all-star cast featured on a mixture of passenger and freight turns.

Commentary for the programme is provided by Radio and TV’s, Ian Champion.
