A study of the unique mainline DC electric route connecting Manchester and Sheffield. The 40 mile route penetrated the Pennine barrier at Woodhead, before descending to Manchester and was Britain’s first main line to use overhead electric power when opened in 1954. Primary motive power was the1500V D.C. EM1 (Class76) and EM2 (Class 77) electric locomotives. The EM2s were sold to the Netherlands Rlys, but the CL 76 continued until the lines closure in 1981. Scenes at Sheffield (Victoria), Rotherwood, Wath, Worsborough Bank, Penistone, Dunford Bridge, Woodhead, Torside, Guide Bridge, Manchester (Piccadilly) and other locations were recorded -some with original sound - between 1954 and 1984 and provide a fascinating reminder of this magnificent route.

Covering primarily the 1930s, 60s and 70s, the programme starts at Newcastle Central Station in 1931, with a wide variety of ex-NER locos. Many rail enthusiasts were drawn to Scotland in the 1960s to record steam hauled expresses, particularly between Glasgow and Aberdeen; but the often overlloked much of the everyday scene on Scotland's secondary lines. This programme, filmed mainly in the early 1960s, concentrates on the lines and branches that fed both the East and West Coast Main lines north of the border, many of which are now closed.

This nostalgic journey starts from Leeds with a railtour that, after pausing at Carlisle, proceeds to Hawick on the "Waverley Route". Leaving Hawick, scenes at Jedburgh and Galashiels are followed by a journey between Edinburgh and Galashiels via the Peebles branch. Further west, lies Dumfries on the former GSWR route to Glasgow. Here a wide variety of steam traction is viewed, together with scenes on the Kirkcudbright Branch.

Travelling north-west, suburban scenery displaces the rural air of Dumfries as the line to Glasgow from the Clydeside resort of Gourock is traced during the last summer of steam operation. Heading eastwards from Glasgow, the Forth crossing at Thrisk is the start of a journey through Alloa and Dumfermline towards the Fife rail centre at Thornton Junction, a journey that also includes views of the Charleston, Kelty and Kinglassie branches. The now closed line from Thornton, around the Fife coast to Anstruther is viewed together with industrial action on the Wemyss Private Railway before moving northwards to Forfar.

Several branch lines around Forfar are featured, folloed by arrival at the "Granite City", Aberbeen. From here the 43 -mile branch to Ballater on Royal Deeside is travelled with every station on this picturesque route recorded by the cameraman. A fitting finale to the programme is the arrival in 1961 of a railtour, appropriately headed by ex-GNSR No.49, at Banff Bridge and Macduff, on the Grampian Region's north coast.

The programme begins at York in 1964 before heading to Malton, from where a journey on the pick-up goods to Gilling and Coxwold is recorded, plus views of the closed route to Market Weighton. A regular passenger working from Malton to Pickering and Whitby is joined, featuring views of the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors: plus a journey from Middlesbrough to Grosmont via Battersby.

After Grosmont, Sleights and Ruswarp feature, before arrival at the port of Whitby and here a DMU to Scarborough is joined. The now-closed route through Robin Hood's Bay and Ravenscar is traced before arrival at Scarborough, where, even in 1965, much of the excursion traffic was steam-hauled and several steam classes are featured.

The final sequence shows a Class 'O3' shunter with a pair of brakevans giving demolition contractors a 'tour' of the route after its closure, the prelude to the lifting of the line.

Between 1966 and 1970, more than four million tons of stone was transported by rail from Magheramorne, near Larne, to Belfast for use in the construction of the M2 motorway. This immense undertaking was carried out by daily steam-operated workings that consisted of specially constructed side-discharge hopper wagons, powered by 2-6-4 tank locomotives, known as 'Jeeps'. These workings were the last commercial use of steam traction in Northern Ireland and the last example of revenue-earning broad-gauge steam operation in Great Britain. Other parts of the Northern Ireland rail network also feature, including the line to Londonderry, together with scenes at Belfast's York Road Station, with Beyer-Peacock built 0-6-4T 'Lough Erne', plus the 1970 'Colmcille Railtour' headed by ex-GNR 4-4-0 No. 171 'Slieve Gullion'. This video is a vivid reminder of the final years of steam traction in Northern Ireland.

In September 1935 the first of the Class A4 Pacifics emerged from the London North Eastern Railway’s Doncaster Locomotive Works and they quickly gained favour with both the travelling public and rail enthusiast alike. However, just as they had replaced older designs on the East Coast Main Line, by the early 1960s diesel traction had displaced the A4s from their regular express passenger workings.

Fortunately, in 1962, a decision by the Scottish Region of British Railways to employ the A4s on the tightly-timed 3-hour expresses between Aberdeen, Perth and Glasgow gave many of the class a new lease of life. One ‘A4’ enthusiast, Eddie Stanbridge, decided to make a film record of the A4s’ final years and over a three-year period travelled regularly to Scotland from his home in Norwich to film them.

Filmed almost entirely on 16-mm colour film taken between 1962 and 1966, this programme shows A4s - and other locomotive classes at work on the East Coast main line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen together with workings between Glasgow, Perth, Forfar and Aberdeen.

Described by the LMS as "The Gateway to Scotland', Carlisle is the starting point of the programme with scenes filmed in 1962 at Citadel Station and Kingmoor Depot. Steam traction is predominant, with 'Duchess' Pacifics still handling WCML expresses!

North of Carlisle on the WCML, Beattock Station is featured and, after scenes here and on the incline with the steam bankers hard at work, the next location is Carstairs with film of a railtour headed by a Duchess', followed by scenes at Stranraer, Ayr and the Waterside mining complex with its associated heavy coal trains.

Returnin to Carlisle, the Waverley Route is followed with steam traction much in evidence at Edinburgh's Millerhill Yard, Whitrope, Shankend, Hawick and Galashiels. From St. Boswells, the line to Kelso, Coldstream, Tweedmouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed is traced and, north of Berwick, the branch lines to Eyemouth and North Berwick feature.

The next area to be shown is Fife, with film taken in 1960 on board a special working from St. Andrews to Thornton Junction via Methil Docks and Buckhaven. After Thornton, the Leslie Branch is viewed, followed by with Lindores. Leaving Fife behind: Stirling, Dunblane, Callander and the line through Glen Ogle feature, including film of the Killin and Ballachullish Branches. The West Highland Line is next, with film of the preserved 'Glen Douglas' and an ex-NBR Class J37 leaving Crianlarich in 1963 as they head for Fort William. Moving to Perth, film taken in 1930 shows a wide range of pre-grouping locomotives that offer an interesting contrast with locomotives recorded on film thirty years later. From Perth, railtour visits show Bankfoot, Coupar Angus, Forfar and Blairgowrie before the programme moves north to Ballinluig, the Aberfeldy Branch, Killiecrankie and Aviemore.

Aviemore is left on board a railbus service to Boat of Garten, Grantown and Craigellachie, with many of the stations on this route captured on film, before moving north to Elgin. From there, the Moray coast route via Buckie, Spey Bay and Cullen is followed, together with a journey on the branch to Banff, and arrival at Caimie Junction brings the main programme to a close.

In the early 1960s, Britain's network was contracting rapidly and, ironically, just as the decline was forcing closures, a cost-cutting type of motive power was entering service - the Diesel Multiple Unit. Yorkshire-based amateur cameraman, Frank Dean, ensured that a record of threatened lines was made before they disappeared forever and he spent the summers of 1964 and 1965 filming rural routes in his native county. This programme is compiled from Frank Dean's film library and features three routes - two of which have survived, against all the odds, into the 21st century, although their appearance has changed out of all recognition.

The first film features the 20-mile long route from York to Harrogate via Knaresborough and Starbeck. Filmed from service trains and the lineside, many the stations retained their original architectural features, with manually-operated level crossing gates still an everyday sight.

A return journey from Malton to Pickering and Whitby is next, a route that was severed between Rillington Junction, near Malton, and Pickering in 1965. This film shows the route across the North Yorkshire Moors, prior to development as one of the country's premier heritage railways. also features Whitby, where freight traffic was still an important contributor to the railway's business.

The final film is a return journey from Whitby to Middlesbrough via Battersby Junction on the picturesque Esk Valley line and, once again, the film is a poignant reminder of how the stations and halts have altered since the Beeching era.

Several different variations unit are seen action; in particular the Metro-Cammell Class 101s and Birmingham RCW Class 104s. BR green and later corporate blue units are seen together with steam and diesel locomotives, providing a nostalgic reminder of the British Railway scene in the mid-1960s.

In the 1960s Britain’s rail network was contracting at an unprecedented rate, particularly in rural areas. Even where routes were not under threat of closure it was inevitable that much of the Victorian infrastructure and architecture, which provided great interest for rail enthusiasts, would be swept away in an effort to modernise Britain’s railways and reduce costs.

Yorkshire-based amateur cameraman, Frank Dean, felt it was important that a visual record of these lines and structures should be made before they disappeared forever and, using his privileged position as a senior British Rail engineer, spent much of the 1960s and ’70s filming rural lines in the North East of England. By then, passenger services on such lines were handled almost entirely by diesel multiple units and, in filming the numerous wayside stations, Frank Dean secured a unique record of the various ‘First-Generation’ DMU types in use at the time.

The first part of the programme follows the 54-mile route from Hull to Scarborough, with its numerous intermediate stations. Filmed between 1967 and 1969 from regular service trains, and from the lineside, many of the stations still retained their original architectural features, with manually-operated level crossing gates and ex-NER board signals still an everyday sight.

Following this journey, the busy junction station at Church Fenton on the Leeds-York line is shown, with a variety of first-generation DMUs at work in the early 1980s.

Finally, the ex-North Eastern Railway branch to Alston, which diverged from the Carlisle to Newcastle line at Haltwhistle, is featured.

The branch first came under threat of closure in 1959 but survived a further seventeen years, finally closing in May 1976, giving it the dubious distinction of being the last branch line to close in rural North East England. Film taken in summer and winter shows the picturesque 13-mile branch in detail, including the last-day workings which attracted thousands of enthusiasts.

Edinburgh - or 'Auld Reekie' - boasted an intricate network of suburban and freight lines until the sweeping closures of the nineteen sixties. In this programme, many of those long closed lines and stations are featured, from the impressive Princes Street Station to outlying stations such as Slateford and Portobello. ‘The Granite City’ - Aberdeen, was the focus of several branch lines, plus routes from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Despite some dieselisation in the 1960s, steam workings still survived particulary on the southern routes from Aberdeen, and several impressive scenes are featured in and adjacent to the city's Ferryhill locomotive depot.

North of Aberdeen, a branch led to Fraserburgh and nearby Peterhead, the Peterhead line diverging at Maud Jct. West of Fraserburgh lies Banff, whose branch line connected at Tillynaught Jct. Superb film captured Banff’s daily steam hauled ‘local’ including last passenger train in 1964.

A circular railtour in 1963 from Elgin to Forres via Craigellachie, Grantown-on-Spey and Dava provides a fascinating view of the network of lines and small wayside stations that once served this beautiful but sparsely populated area. A remarkable 1930s colour sequence features one such station, Dandaleith which handled traffic for the nearby farms and distillery.

Of routes from Aberdeen, the Deeside line to Ballater was the most prestigious, Ballater being the station for the Royal Family’s summer home at Balmoral. Footage of two Class B1 4-6-0 locomotives at the head of the last steam-hauled Royal Train to Ballater contrasts dramatically with views of the demolition crews at work following the line’s closure in 1966.

Perth was a fascinating centre in the days of steam, where ex-LNER and LMS locos rubbed shoulders in the engine depot. Scenes at Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket, the Costorphine branch plus superb aerial views of the Bridge are a prelude to reaching Fife. Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy (and harbour branch) are shown before reaching Thornton Jct. Film of Leuchars Jct and St. Andrews is followed by scenes at Dundee between 1931 and 1981. Next, the programme heads north to Arbroath, Montrose and Kinnaber Jct. plus views at nearby Bridge of Dun. At Aberdeen, the depots of Ferryhill and Kittybrewster are seen plus Inverurie loco works. Views of the electricity work's battery-powered shunter is followed by a journey on the now closed branch to Ballater. An area of Scotland frequently ignored by railway enthusiasts, the South West's main lines and branch lines offered a wide and fascinating diversity of steam and diesel operations. Starting at Carlisle, the WCML is followed to Gretna Junction where the former Glasgow & South Western Railway route to Glasgow diverges. Following this route, the first major station to be reached is Dumfries where views of steam and early diesel traction area reminder of the town's former importance as a junction for the "Port Road" to Stranraer. Departing from Dumfries behind a Britannia Pacific, views of several wayside stations are followed by arrival at Kilmarnock, the northern most limit of this video's coverage of the G&SWR main line. The Ayrshire coast is the next major feature with Fairlie, Largs, Heads of Ayr, Troon and Ardrossan all recorded on film in the early 1960s. Ardrossan's long vanished Montgomerie Pier and adjacent oil terminal are featured in addition to the town's locomotive depot plus locomotives awaiting scrapping at Troon Harbour. Traffic from the once extensive Ayrshire coalfields is shown with ex-LMS "Crabs" much in evidence and, of course, scenes at Waterside and Dalmellington. The final section of the video features a journey through picturesque Kirkcudbrightshire on the 74 mile "Port Road" from Dumfries to Stranraer. Filmed shortly before the line's closure in 1965 and showing every station and major feature of the line, the film is complemented by views of the branch terminus at Kirkcudbright.
