The established author and photographer Hugh Ballantyne is well know for his still photographs of the railway scene but what is less well known is that in the 1960s, he and his wife Toni, also took a considerable quantity of cine film. This programme covers a variety of locations on the Western Region and Southern Region of British Railways between 1962 and 1966 when steam power still featured on many services, including express passenger workings.

Opening on their home territory of the time, the first scenes are on the Somerset and Dorset at Bath Green Park in 1962 when 9F 2-10-0s could be seen on trains such as the "Pines Express". Views along the Somerset & Dorset follow, right up to the closure in 1966.

Other routes covered include Barnstaple to Taunton, the Hemyock branch, the Cheddar Valley line, Worcester to Oxford, the Kingham area, the Fairford Branch, Bere Alston to Callington, Reading to Redhill and the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth in 1963.

Jim Bowller visited South Africa several times during the 1970s and 1980s and this is another in a series of programmes to feature his work in the Republic at a time when many lines were still steam-operated.

The first part of the programme takes a comprehensive look at the Bethlehem to Bloemfontein line with Class 25NC 4-8-4s on the through trains and 15F 4-8-2s on the various shorter workings at the Bloemfontein end.
