Steam operations were still quite widespread in some parts of Africa in the mid 1970s and during this period Geoff Monks travelled to several countries in search of little visited lines and rare locomotive classes.

This volume depicts steam at work in Kenya, Angola, Mozambique and Swaziland, showing such delights as wood-burning Garratts on the Benguela Railway, narrow gauge Bagnall, Orenstean & Koppel and ALCO built engines on remote jungle lines and the world’s last Atlantic 4-4-2s in action in Mozambique.

In Kenya we see Maroon Garratts and named 2-8-2s whilst in Swaziland there are massive 4-8-2s on the ore trains.

A kaleidoscope of steam locomotive classes almost all of which have disappeared forever.

As part of the former British Empire of India it is not surprising that many of the steam locomotives which saw service in what became West Pakistan in 1947, had been supplied by builders based in the UK.

In contrast to the situation in post-independence India, where a domestic locomotive manufacturing industry had flooded the railways with modern standard types, Pakistan soldiered on with its elderly colonial stock. In the 1970s, Ray Hammond visited the country to record these remarkable classes on cine-film.

We begin on the metre gauge in South-East Pakistan where B.E.S.A . 4-6-0s and I.R.S. 2-8-2s are seem on the remnants of a once larger colonial system.

Various locations on the broad gauge are then visited where classic types such as SPS 4-4-0s and SGS 0-6-0s are seen in profusion.

A journey is also taken along the Khyber Pass on the once weekly passenger train.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

This volume recalls the days when steam traction could be found in every country in Europe. Our travels take us to the mountains of Austria, the meadows of Ireland and the pine forests of Finland. A great many different classes of locomotives are seen, mostly in normal service with the original footage being mainly taken in the 1960s.

Beginning on the famous Vordernberg to Eisenerz rack railway in Austria, we progress to the nearby Donaeitz steelworks and then to West Germany where DB and industrial locomotives can be seen hard at work.

Two Irish railtours of 1961 and 1964 come next. Blue 4-4-0s and other types are seen both on the tour trains and in normal service on the CIE and UTA.

Finally we visit Denmark, Sweden and Finland in the very early 1960s. The footage of locomotives in normal service is especially rare, particularly so in Sweden.

A visit by rail to Butere comes next where the last remaining steam hauled passenger train in Kenya was sampled between Kisumu and Butere. Then Classes 29, 31 and 60 are seen on the steeply graded main line out of Nairobi into the Rift Valley.

Main Lines in The Orange Free State

Jim Bowller visited South Africa several times during the 1970s and 1980s and this is another in a series of programmes to feature his work in the Republic at a time when many lines were still steam-operated.

The first part of the programme takes a comprehensive look at the Bethlehem to Bloemfontein line with Class 25NC 4-8-4s on the through trains and 15F 4-8-2s on the various shorter workings at the Bloemfontein end.

Moving to the Bloemfontein to Kroonstad trunk line, the final days of steam are witnessed with immaculate Class 23 4-8-2s charging through Glen and Karee.

The programme concludes on the Bloemfontein to Kimberley line which, despite being single track, saw a continuous stream of traffic worked by more 4-8-4s. As a finale, teh Wardale modified Class 19D 2644 and the Class 26, 3450 work a train double-headed and then 3450 is seen singley in normal traffic.
