In 1984 this 180 mile line from Bethlehem westward to Bloemfontein was 100% steam powered with Class 25NC 4-8-4's. This rugged line has hard working steam action including a daily passenger train, an overnight passenger train, plus freights throughout the day. Due to the draught there were daily water trains from Bethlehem as well. We visited this line twice during our trip and there are plenty of interesting locations and great scenes. Dawn shots of the overnight train, stalled freight, The Saturday Only passenger train which is chased, daily passenger train is chased, 19D 4-8-2 on the Ladybrand branch at dawn, plus visit the shed in Bethlehem. Informative narration and great live audio from these lovely locomotives.

The George to Knysna branch skirts the Indian Ocean in the southern portion of South Africa. This 42 mile line featured class 24, 2-8-2's with Vanderbilt tenders. Most trains were mixed trains, with a coach on the rear. We will see the famous Kaimaans River Bridge, lakes region, and Knysna Lagoon, as well as the steep grades on this line. Several interesting meets of other trains occur, and we see a special passenger train doubleheaded, as well as a freight with a pusher engine on the rear. Due to washouts this line no longer is in service. In addition to this line we make a visit to Voorbai yard and see a 24 switching freight cars, and we visit the shed in Port Elizabeth, and make a morning visit to Grahamstown to see a some nice 19D's at work. Besides trackside photography we also ride the entire line from George to Knysna and back for different views of the trains and scenery. Informative narration and live audio from 1984.

Bloemfontein was once the mecca of steam in South Africa with 4 lines radiating from this important city. Today two lines have steam, to Kimberley, and to Bethlehem. We will see some outstanding morning action at Kloofeind on the Kimberley line, with a stalled freight at dawn that required a pusher engine, plus several more trains after this spectacle. Then we visit the engine shed to see more 4-8-4's between assignments. In addition to this we get a rare look inside the Bloemfontein Rebuilding Shop, where many steam engines were undergoing rebuilding. We also chase the daily passenger train on the Bethlehem line for a few miles out of Bloemfontein. If all this were not enough we have included a lengthy cab ride in the second engine of a doubleheader on the Bethlehem line. This freight train is ridden from Fouriesburg to Bethlehem in engine 3405, but you see the engine ahead as well as interior shots of the 3405's cab. There is lots to enjoy in this video with informative narration and live audio from 1984.

De Aar to Kimberley was the last stronghold of steam on a double track mainline in South Africa that was not under the electrified regions. 4-8-4's are in charge of many trains a day in both directions, with a few being doubleheaded freights. We see action at Witput, and Kraankuil, the tops of grades out of the Orange River Valley. In addition we see more than a day of action at Orange River, where all engines stopped for water and to clean the fires. More time was spent south of Orange River toward De Aar as we spent several days on this line. There is a cameo appearance of 3450, the Red Devil on the Daily Passenger Train, as well as the Last Condensing engine (3511) on a local freight and a passenger train. One of our favorite engines was 3436, a red-wheeled 4-8-4 that was seen several days on the daily passenger train, and one day we did some nice pacing scenes, plus you will see nice start-ups of this beauty. We also visited the De Aar shed where you see engines being filled with coal at the coal tower and much more. Narration and live audio from 1984.
