Airbus A380 - Europe's Super Jumbo

Airbus A380 - Europe's Super Jumbo

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: FT146D

Price:£14.95

This is the story of the largest passenger airliner ever built, the Airbus A380.

Highlights include historic film of its first flight at Toulouse in April 2005, spectacular footage of its maiden UK arrival at Heathrow Airport in May 2006 and a dramatic fly-past over the Bristol area.

Airbus clearly believed that big planes, and not more frequent flights, would be the preferred way to handle large numbers of fliers in the future. Their new double-deck, four-engined airliner, the Airbus A380, was designed to provide the solution. The company spent around £6billion in developing the A380, but it was hoped that this investment would pay dividends by providing the solution to air travel congestion and to estimates that passenger traffic would double in 15 years.

The A380 was designed so that it could accommodate more passengers and cargo than any other commercial airliner, yet its designers claimed it would actually increase efficiency, use less fuel and generate less noise. This DVD is a tribute to a record-breaking aircraft, and one which hoped to set new boundaries in worldwide aviation.

WOLVERTON RAIL NOTE: This is my favourite "long-haul" jet. Have travelled on it a number of times to Australia and it is briiliant, far superior to a 747. And no we didn't go first class, business class or Premium Economy... we go the same as most other passengers.. normal economy..

Bristol Railway Stations

Bristol Railway Stations

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: FT141D

Price:£14.95

This superb tribute to Bristol’s railway heritage – which includes visits to over 40 stations and halts in and around the city, both past and present – begins at Brunel’s historic Temple Meads Station, which has been a vital transport hub since the early 1840s.

A number of other stations have also had an important interchange role, such as Stapleton Road which, for some years, served as the main Bristol station for South Wales and south coast trains not calling at Temple Meads. It was also an exchange point for passengers on the Clifton Down to Avonmouth line who wished to change to South Wales trains. In addition, suburban stations were used extensively for travel to and from workplaces a few miles further out, for instance Robertson’s Jam Factory in Brislington, Avonmouth Docks, and Filton aircraft works.

Excursion traffic was also important for a number of stations, such as Clifton Down where special trains conveyed passengers to and from Bristol Zoo, shows on the Downs and on day trips to the South West. As residential areas developed around the city, new stations were opened, including those at St Anne’s Park and Horfield.

The history of each station and halt is fully explained. Some have sadly closed, such as those at Mangotsfield, Fishponds, Ashton Gate and Hotwells. However, many still operate today, such as Lawrence Hill, Parson Street, Redland and Sea Mills. The film also gives a full update on the Filton Bank four-tracking project, which is doubling the number of lines between Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood. This is the biggest investment in the Great Western Railway since Brunel built it more than 175 years ago. Other highlights include a visit to the delightful heritage line, Avon Valley Railway at its Bitton headquarters.

This very special tour is enhanced by dramatic modern film, rare historic photographs and archive film excerpts, and is guided by Bristol-based author Mike Oakley, who has written a number of popular books on West Country railway stations. It ends triumphantly with the brand new electrification of the line between Bristol Parkway and London, which will help to deliver the full benefits of the new ultra-modern, high-speed Intercity Express trains.

Do you remember taking a day return to Severn Beach in its heyday as ‘The Blackpool Of The West’? Did you have fun in the sun at the Blue Lagoon, sample the delights of the Boating Lake, try your luck at the Fairground, or take in the bracing sea breezes on the famous shingle beach?

Somerset's Lost Railway - The Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway (90-mins)

Somerset's Lost Railway - The Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway (90-mins)

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: FT097D

Price:£14.95

This is the story of one of Britain's most delightful railways. The Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway was a quirky, colourful, independent, standard gauge light railway which served the people of North Somerset from 1897-1940. First proposed in 1884, construction took so long that some sleepers were rotten by the time the line opened! The railway was always short of money, and most of the locos and rolling stock were bought second-hand from various sources, making a motley but interesting collection. Over its 14 mile length there were 19 stations, mostly just halts with no platforms and only a hut for shelter. Where there were platforms, they were usually made of wood. Stories abound of times when passengers would jump off to pick flowers or blackberries at the many level crossings. Trains were led across the streets in Clevedon by a guard carrying red and green flags, and the line ran through beautiful countryside. From 1911 until 1931, the railway came under the management of the 'Light Railway King' Col. H F Stephens. This DVD brings the story of this fascinating railway to life, with the help of some superb rare photographs, precious archive film from the 1930s, an award-winning model railway, interviews and aerial footage of some of the route of the line today. A real treat for railway enthusiasts everywhere.

The Bristol Britannia Story

The Bristol Britannia Story

CATALOG SUSPENDED

Ref: FT112D

Price:£14.95

The full story of arguably the most successful aeroplane ever to be produced in Bristol.

In July 1948 the Ministry Of Supply submitted an order for three Bristol 175 type aircraft, following ideas developed by the Brabazon committee. ‘Brabazon III’ ran in parallel with the ill-fated Brabazon project and eventually became known as Britannia. Its development was riddled with setbacks, as two aircraft were lost in test flights, and there were technical problems with the Bristol Proteus engines.

The Filton workforce overcame these hurdles and the Britannia became the first aircraft to carry 100 passengers non-stop both ways across the Atlantic.

The story is enhanced by the memories of test pilots Walter Gibb and Godfrey Auty, together with recollections of key personnel who helped to design and build the Britannia. Extensive archive film, illustrating Britannia’s promotional tours of the 1950s, and remarkable photographs provide a stunning visual backdrop to this fascinating documentary.
