European Railway Line by Line: Austria 'The Semmeringbahn North Ramp 2017'

European Railway Line by Line: Austria 'The Semmeringbahn North Ramp 2017'

Ref: LN906D

The Semmeringbahn is one of Austria’s most famous rail routes linking Vienna with the south and south-west of the country. Built over 170 years ago, today, it is still a busy mainline with numerous passenger and freight trains using the route to travel over the Semmering Mountains. This programme looks at the trains, stations and some of the photographic locations on the north ramp of the line between Gloggnitz and Semmering. With a new base tunnel currently being constructed and scheduled to be opened in 2026, much of the traffic that currently uses the route is on borrowed time as it will be diverted underneath the mountains on to the new line. Our visit was made in July 2017 and shows a whole host of locomotives and train types. Included are classes: 1142, 1144, 1016, 1116, 1216, 193, 386, 4020 and 5022. With as many freight trains as passenger trains this route is a surprising rival to some of the long-established Alpine Crossing lines that feature more prominently in other countries such as Switzerland. The programme shows not only trains but some of the beautiful scenery through which the line was built, including some spectacular tunnels and viaducts that have now helped preserve the line as a World Heritage Site.

European Railway Line by Line: The Czech Republic - The Elbe Valley south of Usti nad Labem 2016 (

European Railway Line by Line: The Czech Republic - The Elbe Valley south of Usti nad Labem 2016 (

Ref: LN905D

Filmed between 2014 and 2016 this programme shows some of the superb scenery and train types to be found along the Elbe (Labe) River valley in the north-west corner of The Czech Republic, south of Ústí nad Labem. Two main lines run alongside the river, one on the west and the other the right bank, both filled with passenger and regular freight train movements, which we see throughout this programme. Over the three years of our filming we show views from high above the town of Ústí nad Labem (both day and some night time scenes), along the steep river valley and to the industrial towns some 30 kilometres to the south. A whole host of locomotive and train-types are seen, including classes 121, 122, 123, 130, 150, 151, 162, 163, 183, DB189, 362, 363, 371, 386, 451, 471, 440, 740, 741, 742, 753, 809, 854 and 814. On the passenger side we see International services - both daytime and sleeper stock, Regional loco-hauled, push-pull operated trainsets and Multiple Units on local stopping services. On the freight side there are numerous examples of coal trains, automotive, petrochemical, mixed freight and ballast workings on both sides of the river. This programme offers an historical snap-shot of one of the busiest stretches of railway in the country.

A wide range of motive power is witnessed including members of DB classes 101, 103, 120, 139, 140, 145, 151, 152, 628 and 401.
